In Southern folklore often the hero is the one who is the most clever not necessarily the one who is morally good. In the folktale this piece started from the husband of a couple is depicted as the hero and the wife as cruel because in the end she is the one who is tricked. I am questioning the wife’s original designation of cruel and unreasonable and the looking closer at the toxic dynamics at play among the couple.
